John McGuinness takes his first Isle of Man TT Superstock class win

Englishman John McGuinness took his first Isle of Man TT Superstock win on Monday, bring his IOMTT career win total to 19. He’s raced in 16 TTs, and the reason he can have more wins than TTs entered is because of all the different race classes.

Here are some of the basic rules for the main motorcycle classes (sidecars also race):

    Senior TT
A new race from 2005 with any machine eligible from TT Superbike, TT Superstock or Supersport Junior TT.

    Supersport Junior TT
A new race from 2005 with machines complying with FIM Supersport or MCRCB Supersport specifications:
    Over 400cc up to 600cc 4 cylinders
    Over 600cc up to 750cc 2 cylinders

    TT Superbike
A new race from 2005 with machines complying with World Superbike and/or British Superbike specifications:
    Over 750cc up to 1000cc 4 cylinders
    Over 750cc up to 1000cc 3 cylinders
    Over 800cc up to 1000cc 2 cylinders

    TT Superstock
A new race from 2005 with machines complying with FIM Superstock and/or UEM Stocksport and/or MCRCB Stocksport specifications:
    Over 600cc up to 1000cc 4 cylinders
    Over 750cc up to 1000cc 3 cylinders
    Over 850cc up to 1200cc 2 cylinders

The winner of the Senior TT class should be the fastest rider/bike combo on the entire island, since everyone is eligible.

Monday’s Superstock win should hold special importance for McGuinness. He’s a TT legend—he won Senior, Superbike, and Supersport in 2006, for instance—but until Monday had never won a Superstock race.

This morning, he will compete in the TTX GP, an all-electric race which is in its fourth year at the TT. He hopes to be the first to crack 100 mph on the course on an electric bike. For comparison, his normal laps are right around 130 mph on the traditional superbikes.
